Short answer: at Savouri, development is £150, and it comes off your first production order. After that you pay for the product, the packaging and the delivery, and nothing else. Here is where those numbers come from, and what the rest of the industry does instead.
Why nobody publishes a figure
Ask a UK blender what a custom seasoning costs and you will be invited to a call. We looked at the public pages of the UK contract blenders and packers a small brand is likely to find, and not one of them states a development fee, a minimum run or a price per unit. The larger American houses are a little more open: the typical model there is a non-refundable set-up fee, a minimum somewhere between 100 lb of blend and 576 finished jars, and a test batch in two to three weeks. Reasonable, but not much use if you want to launch one product and see whether it sells.
We would rather you knew before you called.
What you actually pay for
There are three routes, and the cost is different for each.
Our recipe, your label. No development fee. You choose from blends that have been on sale since 2022, we pack them under your brand, and you pay for the finished units. The quickest way to get a product on your shelf.
Your recipe, made to specification. Send the recipe or a sample of what you buy now. Matching it is part of the sampling, not a separate charge. You pay for the units.
A recipe developed for you. This is the one with a fee. Development is £150, charged when we start and credited in full against your first production order. It covers the brief, the first samples within a week, and the revisions until you are happy. The recipe is yours once development is paid, and it stays yours.
What the unit price depends on
The price per unit moves with four things: the ingredients (saffron and smoked paprika do not cost the same), the format (a 50g shaker, a 500g pouch and a 5kg foodservice tub all fill differently), the run size (50 units is possible, 500 is cheaper per unit, 5,000 cheaper again), and whether we print the labels or you supply them. You get a quote to the format and the quantity before anything is made, and if we are supplying jars, caps or pouches as well, it all goes on the same quote.
What is not extra
Product specification sheet, allergen matrix, nutritional data and barcodes come with every order. A certificate of analysis is available on request. An NDA before any detail is shared, if you want one. None of that carries a charge.
What to bring to the first call
A flavour or a product you like, a rough idea of the format, and a number of units you would be comfortable ordering first. Pricing comes up early, so nobody spends weeks on something that will not work.
